Friday Cabins #68: Hotels, Motels & Cabins Oh My
Reporting live from a Catskills retreat in Upstate New York
Happy EOW! TGIF amirite. We're here with another Friday Cabins, a weekly newsletter covering all things cabins—and whatever adjacent topic we may be feeling atm—for a little inspo for the weekend ahead.
Today, I'm lucky enough to be visiting the relatively new Eastwind Oliverea Valley, a Catskills retreat with cabins and saunas aplenty, decked out in Scandi design to boot. Bonus fact—there's tiny glamping A-frames, too. And it’s all just 2-3 hours north of NYC.
A full review of the stay will be out on our sister publication, Field Mag, sometime soon, so be on the look-out for that! In the meantime, we'll be revisiting the offerings of Eastwind and a few other properties the Catskills have to offer in case you're planning a summer getaway of your own.
Once home to the thriving Borscht Belt in the 1950s (think Dirty Dancing's palatial summer-retreat backdrop) the Catskills have seen a recent resurgence in city-dwellers craving an upstate getaway. In response, a new outdoorsy-inspired getaway seems to be dropping weekly, with some even taking-up residence in campgrounds and hotels that sat derelict since the 70s.
Below, we take a look at some of our new favorites both for their amenities, location, and design, but most importantly ‘cause they all embrace the beauty of the Catskills and a getaway rooted in nature.
So read on and choose your own adventure!
This family or group-of-friends friendly resort takes inspiration from a classic 70’s ski lodge—appropriate, as it's minutes away from Hunter Mountain. At the end of the day, cozy up in vintage-styled suites or grab a pint at the onsite tavern.
Newly opened Neversink aims to provide glamping at an affordable price, ‘cause if you haven’t noticed, things are getting are getting a littttlee pricey. A campground from the 70’s, the renovated property includes campsites, cabins, yurts, and RV hook-ups, all on the banks of the Neversink river.
This newly opened, 30-room hotel just west of Phoenicia is the second Catskills location for Eastwind and the first fully custom-built property. With distinctly Scandinavian vibes, the hillside retreat features Lushna cabin suites and mini A-frames, an outdoor pool, barrel saunas, and communal fire pits. The beautiful Dandelion Restaurant & Bar caters to those looking to hunker down and enjoy a holiday on-site.
Renovated and redesigned in 2022, Hotel Lilien is rustic with just the right of contemporary. Much of the original woodwork throughout the 18-room hotel was preserved, and it makes for a cozy, antique atmosphere. An on-site pool and bar and lounge add a touch of heightened luxury.
This sprawling retreat features 65 beautifully-designed rooms throughout a central lodge, pool house, and mini-motel. An on-site event barn hosts weddings and group retreats, while elsewhere there's a pool, bar and restaurant, and cozy fireplaces.
